At the forefront of recent Red Sea airstrikes, the US has declared Yemen's Houthi movement as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organization as stated by Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken. The declaration will come in effect 30 days from today. During the 30-day implementation delay, US forces state to ensure that this declaration will not negatively impact the civilian population of Yemen by reaching out to international aid providers, partners & stakeholders who are said to be fundamental in providing humanitarian assistance and the commercial import of critical commodities in Yemen - says the Secretary of State
"Ansarallah [Houthi movement] is being designated for having committed or attempted to commit, posing a significant risk of committing, or having participated in training to commit acts of terrorism that threaten the security of United States nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States."
The statement has also been followed up the US's national security advisor, Jack Sullivan
"Today, in response to these continuing threats and attacks, the United States announced the designation of Ansarallah, also known as the Houthis, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist."
Attacks on international shipment by Iran-backed Houthis across the Red Sea have been responded with aerial rocket strikes towards Yemen by US forces. During the most recent attack, four anti-ship missiles belonging to Houthis were destroyed, which was preparing to take off from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
The re-declaration of Houthis as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the White House comes after Ansarallah was removed from the said list about 4 years ago by US authorities.
