In the Arabian Sea, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter seized a ship carrying lethal aid and advanced conventional weaponry. The consignment was supposedly headed for Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen and was sent from Iran.
The USCGC Clarence Sutphin Jr., a Sentinel-class fast-response cutter homeported in Manama, Bahrain, and under the jurisdiction of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), intercepted the vessel on January 28.
The boarding team inspected and found more than 200 packages carrying various military gear. These included parts for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and surface vehicles (USVs), explosives, anti-tank guided missile launcher assemblies, military-grade communication and networking equipment, and medium-range ballistic missile components.
"This is yet another example of Iran's malign activity in the region … Their continued supply of advanced conventional weapons to the Houthis is in direct violation of international law and continues to undermine the safety of international shipping and the free flow of commerce." General Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander, said in the statement.
