Large-scale military drill NATO's Nordic Response 2024 across Finland, Sweden, and Norway began today, an important event for the alliance in the Nordic area.
The Norwegian-led Nordic Response 2024, which is being participated in by over 4,000 Finnish soldiers, is the greatest overseas exercise that the newly formed NATO member has ever taken part in, according to the Finnish Ministry of Defense.
After decades of military non-alignment, Finland, which borders Russia by 1,340 km (830 mi), made history in April 2023 by joining NATO. This action follows the changes in geopolitics brought forth by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In addition to showcasing military prowess, the Nordic Response 2024 is evidence of the closer bonds and increased collaboration between NATO countries, particularly in the strategically significant Nordic area.
In order to improve the interoperability and preparedness of NATO forces in the face of demanding weather and climate conditions unique to the Nordic region, the exercise includes a wide range of military actions, including air, sea, and land components. The need of having a cohesive and well-prepared defensive network to safeguard the Nordic region makes this year's practice especially noteworthy in light of the present security situation in Europe. The focus on coordinated operations is meant to increase the capabilities of all NATO members to react quickly and efficiently to any possible threats.
