On midnight of January 16, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked the following strategic objects with ballistic missiles in Syria and Iraqi Kurdistani regions:
• an ISIS command post in Syria
• the US Consulate in Erbil, Iraq
• a reinforced safehouse near Erbil, Iraq suspected of being a Mossad operational HQ
Kurdish businessman Peshraw Dizayee and his family were among the victims of the missile attacks. US sources cite that the bombardment has been carried out directly from Iran's territory.
The reason for the missile attacks is said to be a terrorist attack in Iran that took place on January 3, in which more than 90 people were killed. The attack was carried out in the city of Kerman, where a commemoration was held related to General Qasem Soleimani's assassination where his family, Iranian state representatives and members of general public were gathered.
Despite the fact that ISIS-K (Khorashan region of the Islamic State) claimed responsibility for the attack, Iranian authorities accuse Mossad and US authorities of assisting the IS in the terror attack.
