Russia suffered heavy losses in the struggle for Avdiivka, as it attempted to breach Ukrainian defenses in the area with several waves of attack. However, Ukraine's efforts to defend the city were ultimately impeded by a persistent shortage of ammunition.
Oleksandr Syrskyi, the newly appointed chief of Ukrainian armed forces has acknowledged that he gave the order for his men to leave the damaged city on Saturday in order to stop more casualties.
After seizing the eastern town of Avdiivka, Russian forces are alleged to have murdered eight unarmed prisoners of war, according to claims that Ukraine’s Security Service is looking into.
According to accounts, two more Ukrainian soldiers were shot in the nearby village of Vesele, and six unarmed servicemen waiting to be evacuated were shot in Avdiivka.
According to a family member of one of the dead snipers, they heard Russian soldiers storm the building containing Georgiy Pavlov - an Ukrainian soldier. According to the story, Pavlov was on a video conversation with his brother-in-law when the Russians captured and urged him to turn off his phone.
Even though the withdrawal was ordered on Saturday by Ukrainian commander-in-chief Syrskyi, it was too late for soldiers such as Pavlov to escape the besieged city.
