On June 1, 2023, a formal meeting was held in Chisinau, Moldova, between the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan. The meeting was mediated by Charles Michel, head of the European Council, with Emanuel Macron, president of France, and Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany. The five-party talks aimed to alleviate tensions in the region caused by the Nagorno-Karabakh war.
However, no formal agreements were made, despite discussing settlement relocations, border security, human rights, and economic issues. Tensions in the region will remain elevated until the two countries can agree. However, the next meeting will not be held until July 21 in Brussels.
In the interim, any attempts by either side to shift the balance of power will likely inflame tensions, resulting in an escalation of the conflict and further destabilizing the region. The situation remains concerning.
