With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), cybercriminals are finding new tools at their disposal that can be used for a wide range of crimes; some are aimed at blackmailing individuals, defaming them, or extortion – cybercriminals who use Deepfake often have these intentions. To simplify, creating a fake photo/video depicting someone else has never been easier before Deepfake

Definition of Deepfake

Deepfake is artificial media that is digitally manipulated to change the verbal or visual appearance of a certain person. The term "Deep" refers to the falsification of photo or video material using the "Deep learning" method of machine learning technologies with artificial neural networks (ANN).

Why is it dangerous?

Deepfake phishing can affect anyone, but cybercriminals often target famous people - politicians, actors, athletes, celebrities, etc. - for personal or political purposes.

Incidents show us that the crime of artificial manipulation of people's personal imagery and voice is mostly faked by criminals in an intimate context - for example, we can cite the scandal that spread a month ago about one of the Georgian singers, whose "intimate footage" was spread through Deepfake montage in order to damage the reputation and personal dignity. The recording was actually fake.

Although Deepfake is not a new trend in the world of cybercrime; the rapid growth and increasing availability of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is exacerbating the damage caused by this crime; through artificial intelligence, the material faked by Deepfake is ultra-realistic and to the untrained eye is virtually indistinguishable from real footage, we can see an example of this with the following video:

How to protect yourself from Deepfake?

At its core, the success of this method always depends on exploiting people's trust and naivety; at this stage, artificial intelligence and deepfake manipulation can be detected by instinct backed by the right training, but the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its public availability leaves us with many risk factors to think about, especially with the oncoming elections as in the US, so for Georgia...
